Decided to make some changes to my original speedpaint here [link]
I got some good critique which has helped break up the background from the foreground. I've also added my character, some more details, and tweaked the lighting.
Spent 4hrs on this altogether now, done in CS4 with my wacom, used some reference.

Hello ! I'm currently writing a story for an amateur website and I found this picture, which illustrate very accuratly what I want. I'd be really delighted if I could use it as a "first page pic". Of course, with the link, that's a given.
